KUCHING: Police, aided by social media, arrested two men for trying to sell off stolen property on Thursday.

The property ― a wash basin and a toilet bowl ― advertised for sale via Facebook, were allegedly stolen from a house in a newly completed housing estate at Semariang here on Wednesday.

District police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said following a report lodged on the incident, police surveillance located the duo aged 26 and 29 years, through a posting of the stolen items in Facebook.

“Police also recovered a toilet bowl with the arrest the suspects who are both locals and thus, solving the case in less than 24 hours,” he said in a statement.

He said the suspects admitted being involved in a house break-in. The suspects also tested positive from methamphetamine, while one of them had a prior criminal record.

“Both suspects have been remanded since July 24 to facilitate investigation under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

They face up to 14 years in jail and fine or canning upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Awang Din advised members of the public to cooperate with the police in channelling information on crime activities for immediate action to be taken.
