GEORGE TOWN:  One durian seller in Penang has gone extra mile to ensure his customers can purchase the king of fruits while maintaining social distance amid Covid-19.

He set up seven wooden partitions to enable his customers to carefully choose which types of durian they want before making their purchase.

Tan Chee Wei, 36, said he fixed the wooden partitions himself, with each booth is about two feet wide, and had also drawn lines of a one-metre rule for social distancing during queueing.

“The wooden partition is to separate each customer and prevent a large gathering in front of the stall. Only one customer is allowed in one booth at one particular time. Customers are also encouraged to register their details and have their body temperature checked before they are allowed to make any order.

“The safety and wellbeing of the customers is my priority and I believe this method will give my customers confidence in my service,” he told Bernama when met at his stall in Jalan Paya Terubong.

He said the cost of setting up the partitions was only about RM300, but being able to help ensure the safety of all his customers when they drop by to purchase the fruit, is priceless.

Tan, who runs a family business of selling durian and other fresh fruits at Paya Terubong, said at the moment, his stall only offer a takeaway service.

“Customers can come and choose the types of durian they want and we will crack it open for them to see before we pack or vacuum it for the customers to take home. There is no dine-in service,” he said.

However, he said apart from buying at the stall, which operates from 9am to 8pm daily, customers can also opt for his online service by ordering the durian via duriankaki on Facebook or dkaki4896.wixsite.com.

He said the durian delivery service is available at all five districts in Penang with a minimum delivery charge of RM5, while for customers in Kuala Lumpur will have to fork out RM30 delivery charge with a minimum order of 10kg.

Meanwhile, one of Tan’s customer, Azaz Afzan Rosli, 39, said he feels safe to choose and purchase his favourite durian here as the place strictly abide by the SOP.

Azaz Afzan who came with his wife Siti Aminah Darwin, 41, said the wooden partitions also give durian lovers the freedom to pick their most preferred type of the fruit without risking their safety.

“Although we are not allowed to savour the durian right there, the safety measure taken by this seller is at optimum level and safe for all,” he said. – Bernama
