KUCHING: Poor and destitute senior citizens at the Home of Peace in Jalan Landeh, Kota Padawan near here were treated to an early Christmas party yesterday.
It started with speeches from the event’s joint organisers, followed by Christmas carolling led by Kampung Semeba buskers Elena Andrew Munyen, Petrus Fregard and Albert Me-ol, a sumptuous lunch, a quality sharing session, interactions and ended with the presentation of Christmas gifts.
The joint organisers Kampung Semeba Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Timogah.com and DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak also handed over daily necessities such as toiletries, rice and cooking oil from various donors to the home.
Home of Peace is a charity institution strictly for the poor and destitute senior citizens aged 60 years and above. Run by the Catholic Welfare Services Council Sarawak (CWS), the home now has 27 residents.
DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak publicity secretary and DAP Batu Kitang chairman Abdul Aziz Isa said it was a meaningful gathering with the senior citizens.
“At the Christmas luncheon, we had plenty of food including chicken curry, chicken cooked in bamboo or pansuh, mixed vegetables, steamed fish, fried noodles, fruits, cakes and drinks,” he said.
“We had lunch with the residents and exchanged stories with them.
Abdul Aziz, who is also special assistant to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen, said the home promoted good values and respect for all individuals from different racial and religious backgrounds.
Also present at the party were Sacred Heart Catholic Church chairman Jisin Nyud and lay leader Peter Pasen.
