KUCHING: Just as in any festive occasion in Malaysia, the less fortunate are not forgotten during Chinese New Year (CNY).

Some 500 people attended a dinner in conjunction with the CNY charity event organised by 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta, a non-governmental organisation.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah praised the organisers for inviting not only members of the Chinese community, but also the other races to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

“Invitations that are not limited to the Chinese only, but include other races too is a good step.

“In addition to instilling unity among the community, it is also a good effort to allow people to mingle with one another.

“This also ensures that every age group is involved in the celebration,” she said.

Fatimah was speaking during the event held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), here last night (Jan 15).

“This is the uniqueness and beauty of Sarawak which always ensures that the aspect of inclusiveness is instilled in all events,” she added.

The event was attended by various underprivileged groups, including those from the Salvation Army Boys Home and Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching.

“The main objectives of this event are to celebrate Chinese New Year with the kids, sharing the joy of this festive season, and to promote racial harmony.

“More gratifyingly, the organiser and strategic partners today have united and worked together, to gather those present to celebrate and feel the happiness of the Chinese New Year that will be celebrated soon.

“Indeed, the government really hopes that more corporate companies, private individuals and NGOS will come forward to help and continue to care for the needy,” said the minister.

Fatimah also presented angpows to the needy.

Kuching South City Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng was also present.
