KUCHING: A family of nine was left with nothing but clothes on their backs after their house was gutted in a wee-hour fire along Jalan Patinggi Ali today (May 5).

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported as the residents managed to evacuate to safety in the 3.04am inferno.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Padungan and Batu Lintang stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, they found the two-storey house and a motorcycle completely engulfed and the extinguishing deed was performed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

The blaze also caused partial damages to another two-storey house occupied by a family of nine, about 50 percent damage to the upper floor.

Firefighters successfully brought the flames under control by 3.35am, followed by overhaul operations to prevent any chance of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 5.05am.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
