KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) is targeting a voter turnout of 70 percent during the upcoming 12th Sarawak state election (PRN-12).

EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the EC would implement the ‘Jom Kita Undi’ campaign through various media channels to encourage voters to go out and fulfil their responsibilities on polling day.

“These channels include electronic media, social media, announcements through broadcast, and the installation of banners at strategic locations of public focus and other suitable places,” he said at a press conference on PRN-12 held at Hilton Hotel here on Wednesday.

He also requested the cooperation of all parties, including the media and political parties, to take steps in encouraging voters to go out and vote.

He said the EC was also offering the option of becoming an election observer to government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and qualified bodies or individuals who were interested in doing so.

He explained that this would involve observing the progress of Sarawak PRN-12, starting from polling day until the announcement of the election results.

“They are allowed to make observations such as at polling stations, vote counting stations, and official vote tallying centres only, and they must comply with all the appointment conditions set by the EC,” he said.

Abdul Ghani said that applications to become an election observer could be submitted to EC via e-mail (pemerhati@spr.gov.my) starting Nov 24. He added that the closing date for applications is Dec 1.
