KUCHING: We can all do our part to help limit climate change..One of the ways to do so, is of course, by practising the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

In the case of Ha-Mim Marzuki, a 54-year-old retiree who hails from Simunjan,  he transforms recycled items into exquisite and distinctive pieces of jewellery, such as earrings, necklaces and bangles.

He started making eco-friendly jewellery in 2017 after his early retirement.

“I use materials such as used papers, drink cans and shampoo bottles in crafting my jewellery.

“These items are considered waste but I try to turn them into something meaningful. At the same time, I hope they will have a positive impact on the environment,” he said.

Ha-Mim was approached by New Sarawak Tribune when he was calmly crafting his jewellery at a busy shopping mall here recently.

The father of a 13-year-old child said he turned to jewellery making after he retired from Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC).

“I discovered I was interested in beaded jewellery as well,” he said.

“I’m making the jewellery in the comfort of my home,” he said, adding that he received orders from locals and visitors from West Malaysia.

Ha-Mim does not promote or market his products widely on social media but is glad he can sell his jewellery to local boutiques.

Besides the eco-friendly jewellery, Ha-Min also creates jewellery using various kinds of beads made from different materials. He also makes beads from  recycled paper.

“For other bead materials, I get them from local suppliers and buy them from shops here,” he said.

He said he tried to create each piece of jewellery with a ‘touch of art’. “it is a form of therapy for me. I just find so much peace in making them,” he added.
