KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) has made a good call with regard to the 15th General Election (GE15), says political analyst Dr Joseph Ramanair.

The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) lecturer said the important dates announced by the EC provided enough time for political parties to prepare and strategise their plans during the campaigning period.

He opined that the dates were good and should be sufficient to do what is needed for the polls, when contacted on Thursday (Oct 20).

“Despite the economic situation and the annual weather patterns around this time of the year, Parliament was dissolved and an election is called.

“Nevertheless, ample time is provided for nomination, campaigning, early voting and polling,” he said.

Joseph also hoped that the weather would not take a turn for the worse nearing the polling date, which is Nov 19.

When asked whether or not these dates affected those coming home for holidays, especially those from Sabah and Sarawak, he noted that they should not.

“There is never a good time or dates for most important events. It does coincide with the year-end holidays but there is not much choice given the circumstances.

“The polling date is Nov 19 and Christmas is still more than a month away, so it should not affect the voter turnout much.”
