MIRI: Sarawak should be given autonomy in education to better improve school infrastructure and facilities, said Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

“With the advantage, we can develop our schools using Sarawak’s own mould,” he said at an appreciation night gathering organised by the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) Miri held at a hotel here on Friday.

Lukanisman also emphasised the importance of using English language in subjects such as Science and Mathematics at an early age.

He also expressed that schools in Sarawak should have localised content or subjects related to the State in the learning process.

“With autonomy in education, we can put more local contents for example in history subject for schools in the State,….students will be able to learn more about Sarawak’s history,” he said.

At the gathering, Lukanisman announced an allocation of RM100,000 to IPG Miri to replace old and broken tables and chairs at its classrooms.

He also presented excellent service awards (APC) to nine teachers.

Also present was IPG Miri director Mohd Zailani Jaya.
