Education director delighted with Sarawak’s 2021 SPM results

KUCHING: A total of 596 candidates in Sarawak scored straight As in all subjects in their 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) public examination.

Sarawak education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad revealed that of the 12 candidates who had excellent results in all subjects, one scored 11A+ while six scored 10A+, and five scored 9A+.

Overall, he was pleased with the achievements of students throughout the state.

“On the whole, the candidates obtained very encouraging results.

“A lower National Average Grade (GPN) value indicates better performance.

“Sarawak candidates, according to the GPN value in 2021, recorded a value of 5.17.”

He said this when officiating at the 2021 SPM results ceremony at the Sarawak Education Department auditorium here on Thursday (June 16).

He pointed out that most of the schools in Sarawak were in the category of Outstanding, Good and Satisfactory.

“Three schools (1.59 per cent) were in the Outstanding category.

“A total of 30 schools (15.87 per cent) were Good and 153 schools (80.95 per cent) were Satisfactory.

“Only three schools (1.59 per cent) were in the Potential Achievements category.”

Azhar added that candidates with special needs (CBK) also did well. “A total of five candidates scored excellent results.”

Commenting further, he said a total of 29,166 candidates (88.29 per cent) were eligible to receive examination certificates and a total of 17 schools achieved 100 per cent Candidates Eligible for SPM 2021 Certificate as they met the requirements of passing Bahasa Melayu and History.

“A total of 36,385 candidates in the state registered to sit for the exam.

“Of the total, 34,142 candidates (93.83 per cent) are National Secondary School (SMK) students, 937 (2.58 per cent) are Private Secondary School students.

“Some 316 students (0.87 per cent) are candidates under agencies other than the Ministry of Education (MoE), 26 (0.07 per cent) are from Sekolah Menengah Agama Rakyat (SMAR) and 964 students (2.65 per cent) are private candidates,” he elaborated.

For the record, several schools were announced as the best in Sarawak based on School Average Grade (GPS), including SM Sains Kuching Utara, SM Sains Kuching and SM Sains Miri.

“Besides that, SMK St Elizabeth, Kolej Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah, Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Agama Miri, Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, SMK St Anthony, SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi, SMK Kubong, SMK Ting Hin, SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab, SMK Tung Hua, SMK Methodist, SMK Tinggi Sarikei and SMK Sungai Tapang.”
