KUCHING: The native community must focus more on education to free themselves from the clutches of poverty, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

He said education is a very important issue in all societies, including the Dayaks, as it determines the future.

“You may have problems with finances when it comes to education but, here in Sarawak our state government provides financial assistance such as through the Sarawak Foundation and also for us Dayaks, we have the Dayak Cultural Foundation.

“You will receive the assistance and there are is a lot to be given so poverty is not an excuse to not go to school. We will be able to assist and find ways to overcome this problem,” he said.

He said this  during the Dayak Think-Tank Association Sarawak (DTTAS) Pengerami Ngiling Bidai ceremony at Penview Convention Centre (PCC) Demak on Saturday evening (June 11).

He commended the DTTAS effort to hold two education programmes for the Dayak community namely the Education Roadshow 2022 and Education Carnival.

“To me it is a very noble objective to try to instil necessary skills among the unemployed in the rural areas.

“There are numbers of our children in the longhouses, after Form 5 and Form 6, they still not employed. Therefore, it is important for them to enrol in any skills training programmes provided so that they can use their skills in their future jobs.

“So tonight, as a Gawai reward, I approve a total of RM150,000 for DTTAS to organise and hold the programmes.

“These programmes need to be supported because jobs are our main problem and I hope with these programmes it could highlight and instil working skills that are required in our job sectors,” he pointed out.

Also present during the event were his wife, Datin Amar Datu Doreen Mayang, DTTAS founder Wellie Henry Majang, DTTAS vice president II Diana David Itang, acting director of Agriculture Sarawak Dominic Chunggat and acting director of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Pascal Dagang.
