KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has always taken the development of education and the welfare of students seriously, says a Yayasan Sarawak top official.

Which was why, said director Azmi Bujang, the state government came up with the Inisiatif Graduan Pulang Sarawak.

The RM300 air ticket subsidy is for those pursuing their education at university level.

“This initiative will help students studying in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan to buy air tickets, especially during the festive season,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said Abang Johari made the pledge during the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak programme at PWTC, Kuala Lumpur last year, following requests from many students.

He added that the state government had also sought ways to help students from rural areas in terms of travel costs and other needs.

The first batch consisting of 576 students received the subsidy amounting RM172,800.

Fazzrudin said 3,471 applications had been received and another 2,775 applications had been processed.
