OYA: Thirty-six Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMBC) undergraduates took part in a ‘Putra Bakti’ programme at Kampung Senau here.

The three-day (Sept 20-22) programme gave them a good opportunity to learn something new outside their lecture rooms.

During the course of the programme which ended last Sunday they stayed with their foster parents in the village.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said in Kampung Senau they learned a lot of things such as the local culture, food and dialect of the people who are mostly Melanau.

She said those things which could help expand one’s perspectives and open one’s mind cannot be found in books or lecture rooms.

“You can learn them only through being immersed in the community and mingling with the people,” she said at the closing of the programme at Kampung Senau open hall here.

Fatimah who is also Dalat assemblywoman thanked UPMBC for having chosen Kampung Senau for the programme.

She said the village has its own uniqueness, attraction and strength.

According to her, a similar programme was held before in Kampung Sungai Ud in Dalat near here.

“It is hoped that this programme is not just ‘touch and go’, so if you have time and opportunity, try to communicate and drop by in future,” she said, adding that they will always be welcomed.

Dalat and Mukah Distrrct Council (MDDM) walikota Kadir Jamil, Dalat District Officer Kueh Lei Poh and Mukah Division Temenggong Hendi Suhai also attended the event.
