KUCHING: The delivery system for government initiatives aimed at alleviating the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic must be efficient and streamlined so that the people can benefit from these incentives as soon as possible, said Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee.

He said that government measures such as the recently announced National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana) were much needed.

“The stimulus package must be timely to ensure its effectiveness in providing assistance,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted on Saturday.

Secondly, he said that the overall policies of the nation must be business-friendly in attracting both local and foreign investments to spur the country’s economy.

Besides the economic packages, he emphasised that political agenda was equally important as policies based on race and religion were viewed negatively by foreign investors.

“The recent call for alcohol ban, the perennial flawed education policies and overall transparency for the entire government machinery are issues that need to be reviewed and the government must send the right message to the people and investors to give them the renewed confidence that Malaysia is a business-friendly, safe, and moderate country that can accommodate all,” he said.

Meanwhile, he commended Penjana, saying that the government’s continued assistance to the people and business community was welcome.

“All the incentives and initiatives are focused on sectors which are mostly affected by the pandemic,” noted Wee.

However, he said that the public should realise that the economic slowdown and downturn was inevitable.

“In anticipating such an environment, everyone needs to readjust their mindset and realign their strategies to meet the challenges,” he advised.

He lauded the federal and state governments for coming up with stimulus packages and relief measures, with the state government also having the vision to set up the Sarawak Economic Action Council to map out the post Covid-19 pandemic economic agenda and strategic goals moving forward.
