MERADONG: Eight men were arrested for cockfighting last Sunday (Oct 10).

They were picked up by a police team from the district’s Criminal Investigation Department at an open-space area at Jalan Tanjung Manis around 3.30pm.

Meradong police chief DSP Sekam Anoi said the men attempted to flee the scene, however, their efforts were short-lived as they were arrested right away.

“Also seized were a live rooster, four dead ones, two betting boards, three spurs and a weighing scale.

“The suspects, aged between 33 and 63, and the seized items, were taken to the police station for further action,” he said.

Sekam added that all eight men were issued a RM1,500 compound each under Regulation 17 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures in Local Areas of Infection) (No 3) 2021 for violating the standard operating procedures under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) 2021.

They are also being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1962.
