PADAWAN: An elderly man was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl in a village in Siburan, on Monday (Aug 17).

District police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the 62-year-old suspect was arrested at his home following a police report lodged against him around 11.15am on the same day.

On Aug 15, the victim complained of pain in her genitals to her mother.

“The victim told her mother that it was the doing of an elderly man who owns a grocery store (which is also located in the said village). On Aug 10, she went to buy candy and he had inserted his finger into her genitals.

“The mother asked the victim’s grandmother about the matter, and claimed that the victim had complained to her (the grandmother) after returning from the suspect’s shop on the day of the incident.

“The grandmother was then questioned by the victim’s mother for not reporting the incident earlier, to which she responded that she did not want to augment the matter,” Supt Aidil said.

It was understood that the victim was being taken care of by her grandparents in the village.

The victim was later referred to Sarawak General Hospital for a medical examination.

“During questioning, the suspect did not admit to inserting his finger into the victim’s genitals,” said Supt Aidil.

The suspect is being remanded under Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term not exceeding 20 years, and is liable to whipping upon conviction.
