JULAU: Police arrested a man on the first day of Chinese New Year (CNY) for alleged involvement in illegal cockfighting activity at an open field in Nanga Lango, Entabai.

Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin said the 59-year-old suspect was among a group of people who allegedly participated in the activity.

“The team managed to arrest only one suspect as the others managed to flee into the jungle after noticing the presence of the police around 1.30pm.

“The operation codenamed ‘Op Limau’ was conducted by the district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) following a public tip-off,” he said.

Also seized during the raid were five live cockerels, a white board and a weighing machine.

Andam said the suspect is being investigated under the Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 which is punishable under Section 5(3) of the same Act. The penalty is a three-month jail term and a RM5,000 fine upon conviction.

He reminded the public that the police will not compromise with any party conducting cockfighting activities and those with information of such activities in Pakan and Julau can contact the nearest police stations.
