PASIR PUTEH: A father hopes to meet his daughter, Umi Azlim, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Guangzhou, China, before he dies.

Umi Azlim, 40, was arrested in 2007 and sentenced to death after being found guilty of trafficking two kilogrammes of heroin. However, her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, with a release date set for 2030.

Her father, Lazim Jusoh, 67, said that if his daughter is indeed released in 2030, she would have spent a total of 23 years in prison, the same age she was when she was arrested.

“If she is released, she will be 46 years old, and if I live long enough, I will be 73 years old by then,” he told reporters at his home in Taman Desa Anda, here yesterday.

Lazim, who suffers from diabetes, said he is no longer able to do heavy work.

“Although it’s been a long time since I’ve heard from her, I can’t forget her. I constantly think about her fate in China,” he said, adding that the last time Umi Azlim was able to contact her aunt, Noraini Jusoh, 55, who resides in Johor, was in 2022 and that she informed her aunt that she would be released in 2030.
