Election SOPs to be made known soon

KUCHING: The standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the 12th Sarawak Election will be announced in due time.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the SOPs are currently being finalised.

“The Covid-19 prevention guidelines for the 12th Sarawak Election are being updated by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH), National Security Council (MKN), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“These guidelines will be announced when finalised later,” he told the media during a press conference to announce the dates of the polls here on Wednesday (Nov 24).

Abdul Ghani earlier said Sarawakians would go to the ballot boxes on Dec 18.

He said prior to the polling day, the issuance of election writ would be Nov 24; nomination day, Dec 6; while early voting, Dec 18.

On Tuesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said Sarawak would use a different set of SOPs due to the different circumstances compared to the Melaka polls.

“Melaka is in Phase 4 of the recovery phase, while Sarawak is in Phase 3. However, the situation in Sarawak is different from Melaka because there is limited access to enter Sarawak as it only shares borders with Sabah, Indonesia and Brunei.

“The SOPs will take into consideration views from the Ministry of Health (MoH), Royal Malaysian Police, National Security Council (MKN) and Sarawak State Disaster Management Council.”

The Santubong MP also highlighted that the state had its own laws and had requested to employ its own rules for the polls instead of the ones used in West Malaysia.
