KUCHING: The public have praised the Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) for having proposed a special voting system for voters living in Sarawak’s rural areas. The system aims to improve the voting process and allow those who cannot vote to do so in other ways.

Mathematics teacher Audrey Isis, 32, felt that the proposed system was a great idea to get everyone to decide the future of the state and country. “Sarawak as a big state needs a practical, easy and friendly voting system,” she said in an interview yesterday.

“Furthermore, we want to encourage people to be part of the process.” Law pupil-in-chambers Emma Ting, 26, said the system would ensure that the voices of Sarawakians in rural areas are heard during elections.

“However, ERC should ensure that the proposed system would not infringe upon or overlap with existing election laws and procedures,” she said. Two other interviewees who identified themselves as just Sasha, 31, and Merissa, 26, also voiced their support for the proposal.

Sasha genuinely believed that it was about time such opportunities were created for the rural people to play their part.

“After all, they are also Sarawakians. We should not let distance or geographical boundaries stop them from having this platform,” she said. “These are such positive steps to ensure that everybody has a chance and a voice.

After all, everybody has a part to play in ensuring a better tomorrow for our nation,” said Merissa. ERC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said on August 28 that further discussions on the proposed system are required.
