KUCHING:Village safety and development committees (JKKKs) must be empowered to help in implementing policies of the state government.

Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahamd said the implementation of policies at the grassroots level can be more effective particularly in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“If the village leadership can be strengthened and they play the appropriate role, we are confident that the leadership at the grassroots level will help the government in implementing policies,” he said when officiating at the closing of the Meradong district community policing briefing programme on Wednesday (Sept 22).

Meanwhile, Safiee said the state government would continue to pay compensation to landowners affected by the implementation of people-centric projects.

Alluding to the project to upgrade Jalan Bawang Assan/Tanjung Manis/Sg Illas/Kpg Sebena (Phase II) of Meradong District along 9.32 kilometres, he said the project should be implemented to provide convenience to the people.

He stressed that with this road, the village area and longhouses there will be easier to reach as well as make it easier for the government to bring in other facilities in the area.

“We also presented land compensation cheques for people-centric projects that have been managed by the Sarawak Government, which was to upgrade a road that connects several settlements involving villages and longhouses,” he said.

A total of 33 individuals received compensation cheques for total of RM189,680.50  at the ceremony.

It is the second payment for the project with the first compensation payment being paid in the amount of more than RM200,000.

Also present were Sarikei Division Resident Felicia Tan Ya Hua; Meradong district officer Badjuri Bidin and Sarikei Land & Survey administrative officer Nurezuan Omar Ali.
