MIRI:  Parents, especially those in the rural areas, must encourage their children to study hard so that they can be admitted to international schools built by the state government.

In making the call, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau added, “One of the many good things happening in Sarawak is the move by the state government to build international standard secondary schools for bright students from under-privileged families in the state.”

He pointed out that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also the Finance Minister, had allocated RM20 million under the 2021 State Budget for the international schools.

Dennis explained that besides Kuching, four other international schools would be built in Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and Kota Samarahan.

“Each school will accommodate about 100 students, with priority given to rural students. The schools are meant to groom top students, especially those from lower-income rural families, for universities abroad.

“Therefore, I urge parents in the rural areas to seize this opportunity to ensure that their children have the chance to enter these international schools,” he said.

Dennis spoke after officiating at SK Long Loyang Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) multipurpose hall on Saturday night. The hall was built at a cost of RM315,000.  It was a fully funded state project.

At the programme, Dennis also announced an allocation of RM10,000 from his minor rural project (MRP) for 2021 and the construction of a path from the longhouse to the school under his rural transformation programme (RTP) 2021 valued at RM150,000.

Also present were Long Loyang headmen Dennis Madang, SK Long Loyang PTA chairwoman Lucy Den and more than 200 guests.
