KUCHING: The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) recently handed over 2,603 water bottles to three schools.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng handed over 1,323 bottles to SJK Chung Hua No. 3, 882 pieces to SJK Chung Hua No. 5 and 398 pieces to SK Lumba Kuda at a simple ceremony at the MBKS lobby.

“The water bottles will be distributed to students at these school with the intention of promoting the use of recycled water bottles in line with MBKS ‘No Plastic Straw Campaign’.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank JCI Padawan for sponsoring these water bottles and their generosity towards the people of Kuching. I believe they will appreciate it very much,” he said in a statement today.

Wee noted that the group of young people was very active in protecting the environment and their willingness to join MBKS’ ‘No Plastic Straw Campaign’ showed their commitment towards such campaigns.

He said it was crucial to educate the children on the importance of reducing plastic usage in their daily lives.

“We need to know what recycling is all about and how to practise it. We need to play our part to protect the environment by understanding the 3Rs, namely reduce, reuse, and recycle.

“Children from a very young age must be exposed to this kind of knowledge and education, especially in primary schools. Creating awareness for this group of children is our first step,” he said.

Adding on, Wee said children often learned by example so the adults must take part by practising 3Rs at home.

“Continuous effort and consistency are the keys to success. We start with ‘Bring Your Own Water Bottle’ to school and I believe the students will find this bottle very useful,” he added.
