KUCHING: Villagers of Kampung Sibu Laut and Kampung Sungai Aur — who have been waiting for direct water supply for 60 years — will get their wish by the first quarter of next year.

Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said this came after the Rural Water Supply Zone 1 Reticulation System Project in both villages was approved by the Ministry of Rural Development.

According to him, the project will benefit 200 residents in both villages who had only relied on rainwater and water tanks.

“The project is indeed eagerly awaited by the residents of these two villages.

“InshAllah, by the first quarter of next year, the people’s dream will come true,” he said.

He said this during the launching of the Rural Water Supply Zone 1 Reticulation System Project of Kampung Sibu Laut and Kampung Sungai Aur at the Telaga Air Esplanade yesterday (Jul 18).

Abdul Rahman, who is also the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU), explained that the development of basic facilities in both villages is nearing completion after channelling electricity supply for the past three years.

“When these two basic facilities (electricity and water) are developed in a settlement, then various activities can continue to be developed,” he said.

The project, valued at more than RM4 million, involves the construction of new pipelines, submarine pipelines across Sungai Sibu Laut to Kampung Sibu Laut and Kampung Sungai Aur as well as the Inline Booster Pump Station.

Meanwhile, he said the Ministry of Rural Development will also start a project to channel water supply to Kampung Trombol and Kampung Nyabut at the end of this year.

“This project will benefit 92 houses in these two villages,” he explained.

Abdul Rahman added that after the completion of the project in both villages, all villages and housing estates in the Pantai Damai constituency will have clean water supply.

Also present were Federal Deputy Minister of Rural Development Datuk Henry Sum Agong and Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) director Chang Kuet Shian.
