KUCHING: Longhouse and village chiefs have been urged to monitor their own respective areas of jurisdiction to enforce the “no visiting” police during the coming Hari Raya Puasa and Gawai Dayak.

Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Nyipa’s idea is for them to assign members of their village development and security committees (JKKKs) or women’s bureaux to patrol around their own longhouses, especially during the first and second day of Gawai.

“This is crucial to help break the chain of transmission of Covid-19 during the festive season,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune, yesterday.

Rayong admitted that it was hard for some people to acknowledge and accept the reality that they were prohibited from celebrating Gawai like they used to do in years past.

“(But) everyone must obey the prohibition if we want to win the war against Covid-19. Prevention is always better than cure, so we need cooperate from each other and the authorities so we can get back to our normal life as soon as possible,” he said.
