KUCHING: Sarawak Worker’s Party (SWP) has appointed Captain (Rtd) Engga Unchat as acting president until the party’s triennial delegates conference scheduled in December this year.

He takes over from Munan Laja who resigned as president on March 20.

Engga said Munan had asked him to lead the party as acting president. David Munan is acting deputy president and Lavenia Mawas — acting secretary general.

“Munan informed the supreme council of his decision to take a break in politics and to resign as party president and as a member of SWP.

“He said he wanted to go back to his hometown and be a farmer,” Engga said.

He added that SWP was saddened to let Munan go because he was very close to the party, but had to accept and respect his decision.

“No matter what, he is always our good friend, and we wish him all the best,” he said.

Engga, 64, has been the deputy president of SWP since 2015.
