KUCHING: The sports industry has become a driving force for economic growth, said Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor said Sarawak needs to gain empowerment to achieve sustainable growth.

“The Asean Association for Sport Management Conference (AASM) 2023 featured renowned international and local speakers from different disciplines who will share their insights and perspectives on key issues facing the sports industry.

“We believe in empowering the sports industry community in the country to make major policy changes and execute them for the betterment of sports in Malaysia”, said Wee, who was representing Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian at the International Conference AASM 2023 Gala Dinner at the Imperial Hotel here last night (Aug 18).

Wee added that the conference is not only timely but also relevant given the government’s seriousness about developing the sports industry.

Following that, he hoped that during the conference, discussions would be used as references and guidelines for researchers and practitioners to help improve the current development of the sports industry locally and regionally.

He also highlighted that the conference is being organised physically for the first time in Malaysia after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two-day event theme, ‘The Sports Industry and the Sustainability Agenda: Action and Education Through Sports’, will explore opportunities, especially in the sports industry, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Also present was AASM president Dr Cheng-Nan Keng.
