PADAWAN: Sarawak has enough supply of the rabies vaccine or mad dog vaccine for the people.

This was confirmed by Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian yesterday when launching the Padawan International 4×4 Challenge at the Bengoh Settlement Scheme here.

“At present, there is sufficient quantity of the anti rabies vaccine to be given to those who have been bitten by dogs.

“However, the people should try to avoid being bitten by dogs. Otherwise, the supply will quickly run out,” he said.

Dr Sim did not disclose the quantity of the vaccine currently available but insisted that there was no plan to increase its supply because the vaccine had a limited life span and could be wasted if it was not used.

“We also do not want the opposition to make a supply of anti-rabies vaccines that have not been used and expire as their next issue and accuse the state government of wastage for ordering too much supply but little has already been used,” he said.

“If bitten by a dog infected with the disease, a victim should be given four doses of anti-rabies vaccine, with each injection costing RM400.

“But now, it is given free by government to any victim.

“Therefore, we are asking people who are bitten by dogs to immediately clean the bite wounds with soap and continue to seek treatment at the nearest hospital and clinic to be given an anti-rabies injection if necessary,” he said.

“This is because the rabies virus can reach part of the brain within three weeks to three months after being bitten by a dog; it depends on which part has been bitten.”
