BINTULU: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Women and Youth wings must play active roles to strengthen the party and ensure it remains relevant in the current political scenario.

PDP deputy president Datuk Anthony Nogeh Gumbek said the change in political landscape of the country after the 14th General Election (GE14) demanded party members to work hard and be active in their respective constituencies.

“In the next state election, it will be more challenging following Parliament’s decision to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 years,” he said during the PDP Women and Youth triennial general assembly here.

He said in the coming election, the number of voters would increase, and therefore it was critical for the party to engage with young voters.

“With the change in voting age, I am confident come the next state election, we will see more three or four cornered fights,” he said.

Therefore, he advised the Women and Youth wing to recruit new members by targeting the of 18 years age group and especially university graduates.

“This is because these people will form be largest group of voters in the future,” he said.

Nogeh also urged women and youth members to be fully committed in implementing decisions of the party to remain progressive.

Over 300 members Women and Youth members attended the assembly. Also present were PDP vice presidents Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep and Roland Duat Jubin.

Datuk Chiew Yen and Robert Ayu retained their post as Women and Youth chief respectively for the 2019 – 2021 period.
