KUCHING: Many women in the Demak Laut constituency have successfully become entrepreneurs after undergoing certification courses to hone their entrepreneurial skills.

Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the courses included skillsets in frozen foods, sweets, and personal grooming. It is open to all residents of the 28 villages in Demak Laut.

“Each participant who joins this certification course will be awarded a certificate which can be used to obtain assistance from the government, such as Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Tekun, Bank Agro, Bank Rakyat, and so on,” he said.

He said previously, entrepreneurs had to register their enterprise to obtain a business licence if they wished to continue in the entrepreneurial field as a full-time career.

He said this after presenting Premium Kek Lapis Course Certificates at Santubong Community College recently.

A total of 15 participants comprising women entrepreneurs from Kampung Tanjong Bako took part in the course.

Dr Hazland said that in order to be a successful entrepreneur, one must have specific skills as well as knowledge regarding the ins and outs of business, especially financial management.

“Entrepreneurs must understand the aspect of good financial management to ensure that the business they run is efficiently managed.

“Aside from that, entrepreneurs must have a premises or place of business and social media accounts such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for the purpose of promotion and marketing according to the current situation,” he said.

He said due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many entrepreneurs had been impacted due to the lack of demand for their products and not being able to trade openly, in compliance with the standard operating procedure (SOP).

He hoped that with measures such as the certification courses, entrepreneurs’ socioeconomic could be improved and women would be empowered in their careers as entrepreneurs.
