KUCHING: The apparent lack of state-of-the-art firefighting facilities faced by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) have caught the attention of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK).

Its president Voon Lee Shan urged Putrajaya to provide modern and high-tech equipment to Sarawak Bomba for it to combat fire incidents effectively.

He was commenting on an incident at a shop lot in 3rd Mile, Maong Bazaar which caught fire yesterday. He noted the firefighters lacked modern facilities to quickly and effectively contain the blaze.

“I plead with the relevant authorities, especially the federal government, to provide state-of-the-art equipment to Bomba Sarawak.

“At the moment there are many high-rise buildings and in the event of a fire breakout, Bomba may not be able to do a good job without proper equipment. The supply of equipment and facilities to Bomba is a federal responsibility”, he told a press conference at his law firm in Saradise, here today.

Voon also noticed that some of the hoses used by the firemen were leaking and urged the authority to replace them.

“The hoses used by Bomba have sprung a leak and are no longer suitable. They should be replaced and the firefighting equipment should be upgraded.

Also present at the press conference were Lue Cheng Hin, the PBK candidate who is standing in Stampin under the Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PBB) symbol, and Voon’s personal assistant Alex Kong.
