KUCHING: It is crucial for university graduates to equip themselves with various skills to enhance their employability and marketability, said Education, Science and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee.

He said university students and graduates must not solely rely on formal education in their pursuit of securing employment.

He noted that there is stiff competition in the job market, so it is important to ensure that one is at a level higher than the competitors.

“While there may be employment opportunities available in the market, the competition is very tough. This is something that university graduates must be aware of so that they can equip themselves with skills for added value.

“There are many ways to increase one’s marketability and employability which includes enrolling oneself for online courses. While this may incur some costs, it is a good investment as it also improves one’s knowledge,” he said during the virtual launch of MyCareer @ Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) Borneo Zone (Sarawak), organised by University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak, on Monday (May 24).

Dr Annuar said the programme is important to assist fresh graduates with their employment opportunity, especially during this challenging time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that the programme also has significant meanings to parents who have invested in their children’s education.

Recalling on his experience as a fresh graduate, Dr Annuar said that he was fortunate enough to be offered an employment opportunity before the completion of his studies.

“However, times have changed. Similar situation is not occurring even though we still need a lot of medical doctors and other professionals.

On another note, the Nangka assemblyman also urged for industry players to provide more career opportunities for Sarawakians.

He said it would reduce and prevent them from migrating to other places that offer better opportunities.

“I believe that Sarawakian graduates share the common spirit and aspiration of wanting to be successful. This must be used to our advantage as it will facilitate in achieving the state government’s ambition of becoming a developed state by year 2030,” he added.
