KUCHING: Travel agencies found operating against existing laws will face the wrath of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), said Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Reacting to reports about travel agents purchasing flight tickets wholesale and reselling them at a higher price to passengers, he said:

“I have asked my deputy minister (Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan) to conduct a thorough investigation and engage with all travel agencies in the country.

“Should investigation show that such an issue is indeed true, we will take action on the travel agency involved.

“We will not rule out cancelling their license if they are conducting their business against the laws.”

He was speaking to reporters after an official work visit to the Sarawak Contingent Police headquarters (IPK) this morning (Feb 1).

The Bintulu MP will make an announcement on the matter soon after receiving an update from his deputy and after attending the Asean Tourism Forum in Indonesia.

Asked whether there is a request to add more tourist police in the state, Tiong said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri will look into increasing their number, especially in Sibu and Bintulu.

He said he will try his best to boost and improve Sarawak’s tourism sector with the help of the state government.

“I also appeal to netizens to help promote Malaysia’s tourism and not give negative remarks to scare away our international tourists from coming to our country, especially to Sarawak,” he said.
