BAU: A detainee who escaped from the Tapah police station lockup on June 12 and was recaptured last week appeared in a Kuching court today to face charges under Section 224 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Datuk Mancha Ata said the male Indonesian was re-arrested last Wednesday (June 15) following a manhunt.

Mancha said the 21-year old suspect will face charges under Section 224 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

“The suspect was re-arrested at 9 am on June 15 near a fishing pond along Jalan Kuching-Serian, thanks to crucial information provided by the public,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the handover of duties by outgoing Bau district police chief DSP Poge Nyaon to ASP Jugah Aleng who assumes the position as the new district police chief.

Meanwhile, he said police are looking for the second Indonesian escapee, 31, who is still at large.
