KUCHING: Sarawak is in need of more Senior Citizen Activity Centres (PAWE) to be established.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this is to prepare Sarawak as it will face the status of an ageing state by 2028.

“Therefore, it is hoped that in the Budget 2024 to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 13 will include the increment of budget to establish more PAWE in the state based on each state constituency.

“At the moment, we only have 13 PAWE in the state,” she said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune today.

For the record, as Sarawak heads towards the ageing status ahead of other Malaysian states that have been projected to hit the status by 2030, KPWK has poured in their efforts to examine the existing policies and initiatives done by developed countries for the elderly.

From there, she said the ministry will select and customise approaches that best suit Sarawak’s specific needs.

“By 2028, our goal is not only to achieve developed status for Sarawak but also to significantly elevate the social well-being index of our residents.

“That is our aim and aspirations for an ageing state,” she said.
