KUCHING: Every commencement leads to an eventual conclusion, irrespective of the position’s significance.

Senior Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leader Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said words to this effect following speculation that a new Head of State will be appointed soon in Sarawak.

“In my view, every undertaking has a natural end, and any role should be undertaken by an individual competent enough to fulfil its responsibilities,” he said.

“I’m not implying that the present person is incapable of fulfilling duties, but it’s widely acknowledged that age catches up, making it increasingly challenging to meet responsibilities – standing becomes difficult, and so forth.”

Having said that Abdul Karim would not be drawn into discussing the merit of speculation that  Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jafaar , who has resigned as Senate president, will replace Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as the eighth Head of State.

The most appropriate approach is to let Wan Junaidi personally answer the question regarding his resignation, he said.

Abdul Karim who is Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, said that he understands Wan Junaidi will issue a statement.

“I also read on social media speculations that he might be appointed governor.

“Whether that is true or not, we just have to wait. For me, these are all speculations; predictions can sometimes be correct and sometimes not, similar to weather forecasts,” he said after officiating at the grand opening of Kawasaki Kuching Showroom at Travillion Centre today (Jan 20).

But he conceded that Taib’s term may be approaching its end.

Whether an extension will occur or not relies on recommendations from the state, as well as decisions from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers, which will ultimately determine the outcome, he explained.
