KUCHING: The public, including community leaders and resident committees play an important role to help in containing the spread of Covid-19.

Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordinator for coastal Kuching, Samarahan and Lundu, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said resident committees such as the Village Development and Security Committee, Neighbourhood Watch, Friendly Neighbourhood as well as the People’s Volunteer Corps should be mobilised as a coordinator of preventive measures in the community.

He said these groups can play a role in improving security enforcement, recording the movement of visitors and local residents, and ensuring the standard operating procedures (SOPs) are adhered to.

“Meanwhile, the public can report to the authorities if they come across anyone who violates the SOPs, particularly those undergoing quarantine,” he said on Monday (Apr 26).

The Demak Laut assemblyman said village heads and community leaders must also report every social activity carried out at the village-level in efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He added that government agencies such as the State Health Department, Information Department of Malaysia, and others also play an important role in disseminating the latest information, such as the SOPs to the community.

“This is crucial so that the community always abides by the SOPs and protect themselves, their families and others against Covid-19,” he said.
