Ex-MP Ahmad Lai dies

MIRI: Former Sibuti MP Datuk Ahmad Lai Bujang died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. He was 69.

Ahmad Lai drew his last breath at 5.32am, his passing was confirmed by his eldest son, Nazri Ahmad Lai.

“His (Ahmad Lai) body will be brought from Kuala Lumpur at 2.20pm to his house in Miri this afternoon for funeral preparations.

“The solat jenazah (final prayer for the deceased) will be conducted at the Kampung Luak mosque after Asar today, and his remains will be buried at the Baluboh Islamic Cemetery, Miri,” he said when contacted.

Ahmad Lai leaves behind wife Datin Dayang Lily Abang Indeh Yahya and six children.

The former MP who served for two-term after he was first elected to Parliament in the 2008 general election, defeating Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, with a majority of 3,648 votes.

He stepped down in the 2018 general election due to health issues, and allowed his apprentice, Lukanisman Awang Sauni to contest the seat.

Before his career as an MP, Ahmad Lai was an entrepreneur. He was a political secretary to the Chief Minister of Sarawak.
