KUCHING: A former policeman was fined RM1,500 or in default three months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for impersonating a police officer to apprehend a man riding a modified motorcycle.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar meted the sentence on Asri Gapar, 30, from Kampung Semariang Jaya, who currently works as an e-hailing driver, after he pleaded guilty.

He was charged under Section 170 of the Penal Code with pretending to be a police officer in Taman Wira Jaya, Bukit Siol, at around 7:30 am on April 16. The charge carries imprisonment of up to two years, fine or both.

Based on the facts of the case, during the incident in Taman Wira Jaya, a 27-year-old motorcyclist was suddenly approached by an unknown man who showed an identification card purportedly from the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters.

Asri’s action was noticed by the motorcyclist cousin who was present at the scene, and he was handed over to the police for investigation and further action.

It is understood that Asri is a former policeman with the rank of corporal who had resigned from service due to mental health problems.
