KUCHING: Sixteen homestay operators yesterday received certificate of excellent quality assurance under the Malaysia Tourism Excellence (MaTEx) Business Certification Programme from Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC).

In addition, they also received Certificate of Compliance under Tourism Productivity Nexus, TPN’s adopt and adhere Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) guidelines.

Officiating at the event, MPC director general Datuk Abdul Latif Abu Seman, said that this was the best time for homestay operators to improve their service quality and upgrade homestay premises.

“I understand that finances are tight owing to the lack of income, but certain changes do not necessitate a large sum of money but instead require more of your creativity and diligence.

“The winners’ improvement efforts are commendable, and TPN’s industry-level standard should provide a good guidance to other homestay operators on quality excellence,” he said.

MaTEx Business Certification Programme certifies homestay operators based on satisfactory fulfilment of the industry-level standard for homestays comprising 181 indicators.

The Certificate of Compliance is awarded to homestay operators who score 90 percent from 69 indicators.

The certification programme is the first industry-level certification scheme in the country which set the entry-level requirements for tourism products and services in Malaysia.

It was officially launched on November 27, 2019 and since then 192 tourism businesses have been certified under the programme.
