SEMOP: Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, has called for a modest observance of the Aidilfitri celebrations this year.

This appeal comes in the wake of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) hike from 6 per cent to 8 per cent, which has triggered a noticeable surge in the cost of living, particularly concerning basic necessities.

“It may be possible that traders are exploiting the situation to jack up prices to maximise profits. However, it’s undeniable that the SST increment will inevitably impact the price tags on several essential items,” he said after presenting donations during a recent working visit here.

The Semop assemblyman emphasised the importance of simplicity in this year’s celebrations.

“Most importantly, prioritising visits to parents and relatives as the Hari Raya festive celebration approaches,” he added.

Abdullah also cautioned against excessive spending and hoped for prompt and effective measures by the federal government to mitigate the economic downturn.
