KUCHING: The contractors who are working on upgrading the drainage along Jalan Masjid, Lebuh Java and Jalan Market are urged to expedite the construction of the new drain.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the project which has been delayed has badly affected business owners and road users.
“There is an urgent need to expedite the long-delayed construction of the new drainage outlet for stormwater discharge at Jalan Masjid, Jalan Market and Lebuh Java which costs RM7 million and was expected to be complete by Jan 2019.
“The slow progress has caused much inconvenience, posing danger to road users, business owners and those working in the vicinity,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Yii said he has written to Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan for his intervention and for a dialogue session to be held to understand the problems faced in the construction process.
The Bandar Kuching MP said besides affecting business owners, the delay in construction also has affected visitors of a government clinic in the area.
“Due to the delay, that area still experiences flash floods when it was supposed to solve the problem in Kuching itself.
“That is why, for the good and convenience of the public, a proper dialogue between DBKU and the contractors is urgently needed, so we will also understand the situation better and inform the public,” he said.
Dr Yii said with the intervention from the DBKU mayor, it would help address the delay of the project and ensure the safety of the people.
“We do not want any unwanted accidents due to something that could have been prevented especially if it risks injury or even worse, death to those affected,” he said.
