KUCHING: The Covid-19 vaccine rollout to adolescents aged between 12 and 17 must be expedited, said Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

He said this is to ease the worries of parents over the safety of their children at school when it reopens as well as reduce the infections to the group.

“We ask the government to speed up the vaccination of students as it is most likely that schools will reopen in October.

“For that, we have to make sure how we can take care or postpone (the opening of the school) because this situation is important for us to go through in the coming months,” he said.

He said this when met after presenting the Yayasan Sarawak school uniform vouchers to schools in the Subis district on Wednesday.

On the school uniform vouchers, Rundi said the assistance will benefit 70 students from five schools in Subis.

“Among the schools involved are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Lamaus, SK Sungai Manong, SK Rumah Ranggong, SK Rumah Goyang and SK Batu Tellingai.

“Selected students will be given vouchers worth RM200 each totalling up to RM14,000 of assistance,” he said.

Rundi said for Subis, 700 vouchers were allocated, covering five constituencies — Kemena, Samalaju, Bekenu, Lambir and Marudi. The distribution will be coordinated by the district office.

Also present at the ceremony were Subis acting district officer Minggu Jampong and representative of Subis education officer, Standly Lusat.
