LANGKAWI: Visitors to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA’23) will not only have the opportunity to take a closer look at the country’s maritime assets but also feel the experience of being a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel.
Using the virtual reality (VR) method, visitors can see from the perspective of an MMEA personnel as he conducts enforcement operations on a vessel, in addition to air winch rescue.
MMEA Intelligence Division deputy director Captain Mohammad Rosli Kassim said this was to allow members of the public to see and experience the rescue mission carried out by the Special Task and Rescue Team (STAR), such as during armed attacks by pirates.
“This is our first time offering such an attraction after having participated in LIMA seven times. I am sure visitors will be excited and not miss this opportunity,” he told Bernama when met at the MMEA booth at Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) today.
Elaborating, he said visitors could also use this opportunity to learn about the agency’s many achievements, such as successfully thwarting an attempt to smuggle two tonnes of methamphetamine in 2020 and combating piracy in the Strait of Malacca since 2005.
He said that besides VR, MMEA’s assets, such as boats and jet skis, replicas of assets, firearms and diving equipment, are being showcased at its outdoor exhibition at Resort World Langkawi.
The indoor and outdoor exhibitions start from 10 am to 5 pm during LIMA’23 from May 23 until May 27.
The maritime demonstration will be held from 10 am to noon and 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm, while the band will perform from 12.30 pm to 1 pm and 4 pm to 4.30 pm.
Themed “The Nexus of Asia’s Maritime and Aerospace Trade”, LIMA’23 is expected to draw more than 45,000 trade visitors and 250,000 public visitors.
The biennial event is participated by over 525 exhibitors, including 140 companies from the defence industry, 101 companies from the commercial sector and 284 companies involved in both sectors. – BERNAMA
