KUCHING: The state’s private sector is encouraged to explore for new technologies in fields such as agriculture, tourism and the automotive industry.

“This is to adapt to the constant shifts of technologies,” said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles Malaysia (Pekema) Sarawak’s 31st anniversary dinner at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night.

According to him, the state government is in the midst of transforming the economy using technology, thus he called for private sector participation.

He said in the automotive industry the future seems to favour a shift from fossil fuel to fuel cell to conserve the environment.

“I must applaud Pekema Sarawak president Tan Sri Abang Khalid Abang Marzuki for his concern and efforts in wanting to preserve the environment by having environment-friendly vehicles in Sarawak,” he said.

He said the state government on its part has already had three hydrogen buses that are now awaiting approval from the authorities to be on the road.

“The state government is going to build five ‘3 in 1’ stations by end of this year. Once it is successful, the private sector can come in.

“I also agree with Tan Sri Khalid that certain incentives must be given, that is to reduce the tax when we import fuel cell vehicles,” he said.

On the need for the state to inject expenditure capital into infrastructure development, Abang Johari said, “That is why the three agencies under Recoda were set up.

“Under the three agencies,
once the land is open, modern agriculture comes in with the application of Internet of Things (IoT).

“I am confident we will able to increase our revenue by being a net food exporter by 2030.”
