KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief Michael Tiang suggested that the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) extend the movement control order (MCO) in Sibu division to at least another two weeks to flatten the Covid-19 infection curve.

“I understand that a prolonged MCO would only hurt our domestic economy, and no one will like this.

“But lessons learned from last year, to fight the outbreak effectively, we have to do what is necessary,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He said it was also the people’s duty to help Sibu come out from MCO as soon as possible.

“While the Sibu district Disaster Management Committee is stepping up MCO restrictions by requiring police permits for work-related travel starting from Jan 28, I urge my fellow Sibu citizens to play a diligent role in complying with all MCO standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Most importantly, if you are not operating any essential services as stipulated by SDMC, please just stay at home and do not go out. For essential services operators, please apply for work-related travel permits for all your employees and comply with SOPs at workplaces.”

Tiang added that frontliners in Sibu, be they medical personnel or enforcement, were facing a serious shortage of manpower at the moment.

“Therefore, I call upon the federal government to allocate more frontline personnel to Sibu to contain the pandemic speedily.”

He also reminded the public to continue wearing face masks whenever in public areas.

“Face mask is your last defence against Covid-19. So don’t take it down at any time when in public.”

The MCO in Sibu division was enforced on Jan 16 and will end this Friday.
