KUCHING: The European Union (EU) is keen on forming a bilateral partnership with the Sarawak government, particularly focusing on transitioning to green energy in the state.

EU Ambassador to Malaysia Michalis Rokas, who also led the EU delegation, highlighted Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s interest in collaborating with the EU, especially in technology transfer, education, and sustainable green energy.

He assured that the EU ambassadors visiting Sarawak will take discussions and insights back to their home countries to explore cooperation opportunities.

“We, representing the 19 EU member states, will bring back these partnerships to our capitals promptly, and we will look into enhancing bilateral partnerships between the EU and Sarawak,” he said.

Rokas told reporters this after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today (February 16).

As such, he emphasised the EU’s commitment to forging reliable partnerships in green transition areas, citing climate change as a significant global challenge.

He also underscored the EU’s abundant technology resources in the field, along with efforts to diversify global partnerships, including sustainable aviation fuel and digitalisation for Sarawak.

“As you can see, the EU has a lot of technology in this field, and we also have a new policy where we try to diversify our partners worldwide.

“Among these are technologies in new energy, such as sustainable aviation fuel, and crucial connectivity and digitalisation for Sarawak. It is our priority,” he added.

Also present during the courtesy visit were Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and the Foreign Ministry’s Sarawak Regional Office director, Duta Fenny Nuli.
