MUKAH: A man’s bid to smuggle in various types of duty-not-paid cigarettes and beer was foiled by roadblock authorities at Jebungan junction, Jalan Mukah-Balingan on Saturday (July 3).

Mukah district police chief DSP Mohamad Rizal Alias said a suspicious looking four-wheel drive vehicle, heading towards Mukah from Kingwood Resort, was detained at 5.20pm.

“A total of 96 cartons of cigarette and 71 cartons of beer were found in the backseat and rear storage of the vehicle.

“The contrabands and vehicle were taken to Mukah police station for further action. The total value of seizures was estimated at RM105,000,” he said.

Investigation found that the suspect, 54, failed to produce any valid ownership documents on the goods.

Mohamad Rizal added that the suspect is now detained at the Mukah police station lock-up.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries a fine of not less than 10 times the custom duty sum or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times of the custom duty sum or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or not less than six months in jail and a maximum five years’ jail or both, upon conviction.
