KUCHING: Four families were abruptly awakened by a fire that destroyed their wooden house at Kampung Tanjung Bako in the wee hours on Tuesday (Feb 8).

Sixteen villagers comprising five men, four women and six children are now left homeless.

Firemen from the Kota Samarahan and Tabuan Jaya stations were despatched to the scene following a distress call at 1.38 am.

It is understood that the firefighters had difficulty entering the scene of the fire due to the narrow road heading to the village.

By the time they arrived, the house was destroyed and the fire was still raging. The firefighters could only concentrate on preventing the flames from spreading to nearby houses.

They managed to put out the fire at 2.15 am.

No casualties or injuries were reported as the villagers managed to get out to safety.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred have yet to be ascertained.
