KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee has decided to show leniency towards farmers as the padi harvesting season sets in.

Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said directives had been given to the police to allow for two persons to travel in the same vehicle.

“Previously, we had noted that only one person is allowed to travel per vehicle.

“But we have to be realistic in a sense that sometimes the husband and wife must go harvest their padi together,” he said during his daily Covid-19 update yesterday.

Uggah however reiterated that the leeway only applies to farmers who have to travel some distance to their farms.

He hoped that the public would not take advantage of the situation as an opportunity to carpool.

Uggah also said Customer Service Centres such as Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile and their Dealers have been categorised as essential services.

He said these services would only be allowed to operate within certain conditions that must be adhered to.

“Only selected premises, as previously agreed by MCMC, are allowed to operate throughout the CPP period.

“This is to support user communication service requirements such as the need for SIM card conversion, billing issues and network issues,” he said.

“The services are allowed to operate on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10am to 4pm with a maximum of three employees at a time.

“The number of customers must be limited to a minimum as well as to practise in-house social distancing.

“Premises must also ensure that screening and preventive measures are implemented for the safety of employees and customers,” he added.
